Why Gray is the New Green
When it comes to customer service and quality of work, Gray & Son continually meets our customers’ expectations as a result of our experienced and dedicated workforce as well as our continuous improvement efforts. We approach environmental stewardship with the same process and enthusiasm. The world we live in has many environmental challenges. Gray &Son recognizes that environmental stewardship, or the “Green Movement”, is not only the right thing to do, but also the most cost effective course of action, for our customers, our employees, our shareholders, and our communities.
When purchasing our equipment.
Gray &Son’s equipment purchases meet or exceed the stringent EPA regulations for emissions control. This action helps to reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and NOX gases significantly, thus reducing our carbon footprint and our impact to the environment. We currently have in our arsenal- two large Milling Machines, two asphalt pavers, two mini excavators,an excavator, gradall, and a sewer/vacuum truck all of which meet or exceed today’s environmental standards. For more information visit http://www.dieselnet.com/standards/us/nonroad.php
When maintaining our equipment.
Gray & Son have set the same high standards by implementing a state of the art washing facility for all of our fleet. The system consists of a microbiological injection system which naturally allows the microbes to remove petroleum products from our waste water. Therefore allowing the water to be recycled safely back into our environment.
Recycled Asphalt (RAP)
Recycled asphalt also known as RAP is America’s most recycled material. It has been estimated that recycling of asphalt pavements saves the American taxpayer $1.8 billion dollars per year. RAP is being recycled and reused at a rate over 95 percent. By using RAP in asphalt mixes not only are we cutting down on hundreds of acres of landfill space each year but we are also conserving the need to use natural resources.
Gray & Son is a leader in heavy highway, residential and commercial paving. A large part of the road-building process is milling the existing pavement in order to resurface and lay the new product. Gray & Son mills over one million square yards of recycled asphalt in a year, imagine 156 football fields. Depending on the project, some of the millings are sold to private companies, but the majority is taken to an approved facility to be recycled back into new mixes. Most of Gray & Sons’ recycled millings are hauled to one of four facilities that belong to our sister company Maryland Paving Inc.
Maryland Paving then uses a crusher to break the millings down into a smaller, more uniformed size, allowing the RAP to be placed into new asphalt mixes. Since there are many approved RAP mixed designs we are eliminating the necessity to use raw or virgin materials. RAP also contains the liquid asphalt that was used in the original mix and when reheated it is usable again which reduces the amount of fresh liquid asphalt in the design.
