A Forrest Hill native, Deonte Jones has spent his summer with the Gray & Son team as a field intern. He is currently pursuing an associate degree in Landscape and Construction Management at Williamson College of the Trades.
“Gray & Son provided me with the experience I wanted in the construction field,” said Deonte. “They do a little bit of everything, and that’s what I wanted to experience this summer.”
This hands-on experience is what made the biggest impact on Deonte.
“Stepping outside of my comfort zone has challenged me and taught me a lot,” said Deonte. “Somethings that you’ve never done before you just have to try and ask for help if needed.”
While Deonte was greeted with new experiences, he was able to learn the ropes quickly.
“This internship gave me the knowledge and power to be comfortable to jump in with any crew in the construction field and be an asset to them,” said Deonte. “It has taught me the basics of constructions and helped me get to where I want to be in the field.”
Deonte also grew interpersonally during his time at Gray & Son.
“Personally, this internship just taught me a lot of hard work and dedication,” he said. “I was able to work with a lot of older guys and see just how hard they worked to be where they’re at– hard work pays off.”
Getting to spend time with the Gray & Son team was one of the most memorable parts of Deonte’s summer.
“I learned a lot of life lessons from the guys and gals in the field,” he said. “Whether it was marriage advice, career advice, or just what to make for dinner!”
As he hangs up his hardhat, Deonte reflects on all of the lessons he learned.
“This summer opened my eyes to all the different positions and opportunities in the construction industry. I have a better understanding of where I want to be when I graduate, as well as where I want to be when I’m 50 years old, “ said Deonte. “It’s opened my eyes to the different positions that Gray offers.”
