Asphalt Plant Ground Worker/Utility Operator
The position of groundman/Utility Operator is an entry-level skilled position, providing a
pathway to learn heavy equipment operation and more advanced maintenance skills in
the Gray & Son Asphalt Plant Operations division. Many of our past and present asphalt
plant managers, as well as some of our division management, have begun their careers
with this position. This position begins teaching the knowledge and skills required to
operate and eventually manage an asphalt plant. This position includes physical labor,
operating hand and power tools, operating skid steer loaders and other light equipment,
and includes occasional night and weekend shifts. A basic knowledge of hand tools is
required. Experience with welding/cutting and fabrication is a plus. This position
occasionally requires working in enclosed spaces and at heights.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Learn the various plant parts and systems, and how to maintain, repair and
replace critical parts. - Perform daily and weekly inspections of plant systems to identify upcoming
maintenance and repair needs. Check parts inventory to ensure the availability
of parts to meet those needs. - Maintain organization of tools and repair parts, as well as shop supplies and
hardware. - Grease and lubricate plant parts and equipment daily, weekly, monthly, and
yearly intervals. - Keep the plant and facilities neat and free of debris and hazards using tools
ranging from broom and shovel to skid steer loader, wheel loader and lawn
tractor. - Assist with repairs and support teammates in plant operations.
- Perform a variety of other tasks involved in plant operations and maintenance.
- Participate in proactive safety-related training to increase skill set and
knowledge.
