What Do Gray & Son Paving Team Members Do at Gray & Son?

The construction industry employs more than 8 million workers across the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. For all of those employed, there is one thing for certain, each day brings a chance to do something new. The asphalt paving industry is no different. Workers spend a lot of time outside and each project brings new challenges.

We talked to our paving team members to find out why they enjoy working on the paving team and share our answers in the blog below.

What is a typical day like on the paving team at Gray & Son?

A career in paving involves working in the construction industry to create and maintain roadways, driveways, and other surfaces using materials such as asphalt or concrete. The paving team at Gray & Son provides comprehensive paving services that include:

  • Asphalt berm
  • Asphalt milling
  • Asphalt overlay & asphalt resurfacing
  • Asphalt patching
  • Asphalt paving fabric
  • Existing asphalt reconstruction & patch repair
  • Asphalt curb
  • Line marking & signs
  • New asphalt construction
  • Stone base

One of our paving superintendents says a typical day involves going out to measure roads, scope work, and determine what crews need to do. Properly taking measurements is a key part of the job, as well as tracking constant changes and updates to the work. While these are the day-to-day aspects of the job, what makes the paving crews great is the camaraderie, says our superintendent. “Your crew becomes your second family because of the amount of time you spend with those guys,” he said.

Paving projects often involve collaboration with a team of construction workers, engineers, and project managers. The ability to work well with others is critical as crews work closely with each other. But, our crewmembers told us, over time you develop a bond that leads to a tight-knit feel with a group that has each other’s back. This can come in handy when it comes to safety, which is always a top priority at Gray & Son.

What should someone who is thinking about a career in paving know about the job?

Before pursuing a career in paving, consider gaining hands-on experience through apprenticeships or entry-level positions to ensure that the job aligns with your interests and skills. Obtaining relevant certifications, such as those for operating specific types of machinery or safety certifications, can enhance your employability.
